Bridging the Continuum: Key Learnings from IBBME

Positioned at the interface of three Faculties – Engineering, Medicine, Dentistry – provides the Institute of Biomaterials and Biomedical Engineering with a unique opportunity to synergistically bridge efforts across disciplines, applying research tools and techniques from engineering and science to challenges in human health. Through its highly collaborative training environment, which includes a strong translational component, IBBME’s efforts span the entire continuum of basic through clinical research and applications. In this talk, we will discuss how IBBME has evolved over the years, including the roll out of a new M.Eng in Applied Biomedical Design, and capstone design courses that involve industrial and clinical collaborations. Specific case studies illustrating IBBME’s involvement will be presented.


Director of the Institute of Biomaterials and Biomedical Engineering, Professor Christopher Yip is a Full Professor in IBBME, Chemical Engineering and Applied Chemistry, with status appointments in Biochemistry and the Donnelly Centre for Cellular and Biomolecular Research. Past holder of a Tier II Canada Research Chair, he is a Fellow of the Engineering Institute of Canada and the American Association for the Advancement of Science and holds grant funding from NSERC, CIHR, and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. His research interests lie in molecular self-assembly, and the development of novel combinatorial single molecule imaging tools.
