Her impactful contributions include designing and implementing systems to improve surgical reporting, automate clinical trials processes, enhance the storage and access of research files, and played a crucial role in predicting hospital events in cancer patients.

Melissa Kozak

Melissa Kozak, PEng, MHSc

Melissa Kozak is a Clinical Engineer at Techna with expertise in developing and implementing electronic outcomes capture tools, as well as in oncology safety and human factors engineering. Prior to joining Techna she worked as a Human Factors Engineer with HumanEra @ UHN where she used human factors methods and frameworks to identify risks and opportunities to improve safety in a variety of healthcare settings across Canada, and to build human factors capacity internationally. Melissa is a Professional Engineer who has an MHSc. Clinical Engineering degree from the University of Toronto (2010) and a BSc. Mechanical Engineering degree from Queen’s University (2006).

Ivan Yeung

Ivan Yeung, PhD

Dr. Ivan Yeung is the Head of Medical Physics at the Stronach Regional Cancer Centre and a Senior Medical Physicist at the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre; he is also an Assistant Professor at the Department of Radiation Oncology at the University of Toronto. He is the Physics Lead in the QIPCM core lab at TECHNA, in charge of the quality assurance and data analysis service provided for a number of clinical trials. He has extensive clinical and research experience in both Medical Imaging and Radiotherapy Physics. Dr. Yeung is a pioneer researcher in perfusion CT imaging and his research interest includes quantitative imaging, radiomics, brachytherapy, hypoxia imaging and theranostics.

Daniel Xun Lin

Daniel Xun Lin, BASc, MHSc

Daniel joined Techna Institute as an engineer in March 2016. He is involved with the development of image guided tracking technologies and treatment workflow QA technologies at UHN.

Daniel received a BASc in Electrical Engineering from the University of Waterloo and a MHSc in Clinical Engineering from the University of Toronto. He brings experience from consumer electronics and medical education industry in circuit design, embedded firmware development, tracking technologies, and software application development.

Mike Andersen

Mike Andersen, B.Sc.

Mike joined Techna Institute as a Technical Analyst in November 2020. He is involved with the development and deployment of several medical imaging software tools and a customer facing image viewer for the Quantitative Imaging for Personalized Cancer Medicine (QIPCM) imaging core lab.

Mike received a B.Sc. in Mathematics from the University of British Columbia and a Computer Systems Technology Diploma from the British Columbia Institute of Technology. In his spare time, Michael enjoys making music.

Jenny Lee

Jenny Lee, MMath

In 2017, Jenny joined QIPCM at Techna Institute as a research associate. She manages software development projects, which include a toolbox to support QIPCM operation and a dicom web viewer for QIPCM external users. As she likes programming, she also contributes to code development whenever possible. She had also performed quality assurance of medical images from multicenter clinical trials.

Prior to joining Techna, Jenny worked at the Radiation Medicine Program at UHN. Many of her projects involved biomechanical-based image registration, for MRI-guide prostate brachytherapy and external beam RT. She also worked with scripting environment for Raystation treatment planning system.

Jenny earned a BMath (Hon) and MMath in Applied Mathematics with scientific computation option from University of Waterloo.

Tina Shek

Tina Shek, BASc MHSc

Tina joined Techna in 2013 to help analyze the medical images amassed by QiPCM from various relevant clinical trials nationwide. Evolving with each trial, she is involved in the development, implementation, or testing of analytic software with the goal of identifying treatment-planning or drug efficacy, or improving pharmacokinetic modeling accuracy.

Tina graduated with a B.A.Sc in Chemical Engineering from University of Waterloo, and an M.H.Sc in Clinical Engineering from University of Toronto’s Institute of Biomaterials & Biomedical Engineering. Her thesis was focused on the application of computational fluid dynamics to improve endovascular aneurysm repair outcomes. During that time, she also completed internships developing various software applications at University Health Network’s Radiation Medicine Program and Medical Engineering departments: for the purposes of perfusion and kinetic analysis of dynamic contrast-enhanced CT and MRI images, and capital funding priority listing, respectively

Brandon Driscoll

Brandon Driscoll, MASc

Brandon is involved many facets of QIPCM and focusses mainly on helping investigators link their multi-center clinical trial imaging needs with QIPCM’s available services and resources. Brandon has led the development of the QIPCM Dosimetry program utilized for the OZM-067 NET-PRRT trial and adapted for use for standard of care Lutathera imaging at the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre. He is also the primary contact at QIPCM for multi-center scanner QA and validation for functional imaging including PET-CT/MR and DCE-CT.

Brandon obtained his Bachelor’s degree (B.A.Sc.) in Chemical Engineering with Software Option from the University of Waterloo in 2004. Throughout his co-op work terms Brandon gained experience in many facets of engineering from petro-chemicals and the automotive industry to computer programming. He went on to complete a Masters of Biomedical Engineering (M.A.Sc.) from the Institute of Biomaterials & Biomedical Engineering at the University of Toronto. His thesis focused on the development of an inhibitory peptide for the TGF-beta signal pathway in hematopoietic stem cells.

Shailaja Sajja

Shailaja Sajja, MASc

Shailaja is a member of the QIPCM team at TECHNA, where she leads the proposal development process and contributes to various core lab activities such as grant support, annual reporting and marketing planning.

Previously, she worked as a research engineer at Sunnybrook Research Institute, focusing on dual energy cone beam CT (DE-CBCT) techniques and implementing DE-CBCT workflows for brain radiotherapy.

She has also collaborated with JDMI, UHN, and Carestream Health on clinical validation of dual energy and digital tomosynthesis technologies for thoracic diseases in critically ill patients. This collaborative work received recognition, including a certificate of merit from the Radiological Society of North America (2015) and cum laude at the European Society of Thoracic Imaging (2016). Shailaja holds an MASc degree in electrical engineering from the University of Waterloo and has completed an internship at Mitsubishi Electric Research Laboratories in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

Brad Wouters, PhD

Dr. Bradly Wouters serves as Techna’s Interim Director, and also as UHN’s Executive Vice President of Science and Research. Prior to his appointment as EVP at UHN in 2016, he served as the Interim Director of Research at the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre. He is a Senior Scientist at Princess Margaret and Director of the Princess Margaret Hypoxia Program, a Senior Investigator at the Ontario Institute for Cancer Research, and is a Professor in the Departments of Medical Biophysics and Radiation Oncology at the University of Toronto.

His research is focused on understanding the tumour microenvironment, primarily hypoxia (a lack of oxygen in parts of the tumour) and how hypoxia influences the biology of tumours and how they respond to treatment. His group is working to determine the changes in gene expression in hypoxic tumours, and assessing the potential of targeting hypoxic responses to improve the treatment of cancer.
