The Techna Institute and the Peter Munk Cardiac Centre (PMCC) are pleased to welcome Dr. Bo Wang to the newly created role of Lead Artificial Intelligence Scientist. Working with PMCC, Techna, UHN Digital, and the Vector Institute Dr. Wang’s role is to build and lead the AI team for developing new machine-learning approaches, and integrating them into the care of patients with heart and vascular diseases.
Dr. Wang’s research areas are machine learning, computational biology and computer vision. He recently obtained his PhD from the Department of Computer Science at Stanford University, and has extensive academic and industrial research experience at SickKids and at leading companies such as Illumina and Genentech. His PhD work covers statistical methods for solving problems in computational biology with an emphasis on integrative cancer analysis and single-cell analysis.
Dr. Wang’s long-term research goals aim to develop integrative and interpretable machine learning algorithms that can help clinicians with predictive models and decision support to tailor patients’ care to their unique clinical and genomic traits.
Dr. Wang’s role represents a unique partnership between UHN and the Vector Institute for Artificial Intelligence. He will be appointed as a Techna Scientist and act as Lead AI Scientist for PMCC, joining PMCC’s burgeoning AI team that includes data scientists, data engineers, and PMCC clinicians.
Dr. Wang will be involved in:
- integrating machine learning into PMCC
- the development of the Digital Cardiovascular Health Platform, including a data lake that integrates blood tests, clinical notes, X-rays and more from PMCC patients, and provincial-level health-care databases
- developing predictive models and decision support that will mean more tailored, unique patient care
With unique experience in machine learning, computer vision and computational biology, Dr. Wang will make a great addition to Techna and the PMCC team.
